HUMPHREY, FARRINGTON & MCCLAIN, PC
“When they told me that we had achieved over $1 billion in verdicts and
settlements, I said, ‘Prove it,’” says Kenneth McClain, chosen to the 2011
Super Lawyers® list. “They were right.”
This was another record-setting year for Humphrey, Farrington &
McClain’s trial group, which successfully pursued cases in 14 states in
2011. “We try more cases across the country than we do locally,” says
McClain. “We always have.” The firm has successfully handled cases
involving tobacco, PCBs, asbestos, silica, chlorine and chemicals like
diacetyl, used in butter flavoring.
The diacetyl cases consume much of the firm’s litigation effort. “We have
represented over 500 people nationwide,” says Steve Crick, listed in
2011 Super Lawyers. In May, the firm achieved a $4.5 million verdict for a
worker exposed to butter flavoring chemicals in Maryland.
The firm also takes cases involving catastrophic truck accidents. “We
have become nationally known for trucking crash cases,” says 2010 Lon
O. Hocker Award winner and 2011 Rising Stars choice Danny Thomas.
He and McClain tried the Gibbs v. Albright matter in October 2010 and
were awarded a $35 million wrongful death verdict. This follows the $18
million verdict achieved in 2008 in Garrett v. Albright.
Buford “Bunk” Farrington heads the firm’s business practice section.
“Having a fellow of the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel
(ACTEC) head our transaction section gives us balance,” says
McClain. Farrington is also selected to the 2011 Super Lawyers® list.
The lawyers working in transactions, tax, probate and estate planning
provide a full range of services to local businesses, school districts,
municipalities and individuals.
“Our local practice keeps us focused on the real-world problems of our
clients,” says Farrington. “In the end, that’s what the practice of law is about.”
