5 I have been an active member in many international and local bar
associations. In 2000, I was elected only the third American to lead the
International Association of Young Lawyers (AIJA), a Brussels-based
group, and I participated with the Beirut Bar Association and USAID in an
initiative to encourage pro bono work in that challenging environment.
In 2007, Pres. Musharraf suspended the chief justice of Pakistan’s
Supreme Court. This led to the Lawyers Movement, during which
hundreds of lawyers were arrested and many were beaten. I
rallied international lawyers in a campaign to demand Pres.
Musharraf reverse his actions, which he did in 2009. Two years
later, a delegation from the Lahore High Court Bar Association
came to LA and presented me with this award.
