“We warned them not to be the last one out,” Ken McClain said. He
was referring to Humphrey, Farrington & McClain’s (HFM) recent $5
million settlement of its case against Carmi Flavor and Fragrance
Company, a defendant in one of HFM’s many flavoring-related toxic
tort cases. “Originally, we only demanded $250,000, but they didn’t
take the case seriously. Then we defaulted them for discovery abuse.”
The firm also had success settling educational fraud claims with
Wright Career College ($3 million), a class action with CenturyLink
($7.5 million) and defective product cases with Walmart
(confidential). “The diverse nature of our cases still is expanding,”
says McClain. “We are always challenged by new legal issues.”
Attorneys at HFM have been named to the Super Lawyers and
Rising Stars lists for over 10 years. Ken McClain, Buford Farrington,
Steve Crick, Daniel Thomas, Michael Kilgore, Scott Britton-Mehlisch
and Kevin Stanley have been named to Super Lawyers, while J’Nan
Kimak, Jonathan Soper, Andrew Smith and Tim Kingsbury have
been named to Rising Stars. “We want more of our attorneys to
receive these designations,” says McClain.
Mike Sanders, former Jackson County Prosecutor and Executive,
joined the firm in 2016. He is offering his unique legal talents and
experience to a new group of business and governmental clients.
Buford “Bunk” Farrington heads the firm’s business and estate
practice section. “Having a fellow of The American College of
Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC) lead our transactions section
gives us a great advantage,” says McClain. The lawyers working
in transactions, tax, probate, estate planning and economic
development provide innovative services to local businesses,
municipalities and individuals.
“Our transactions practice continues to grow,” says Farrington.
“Clients continue to need our creative and strategic abilities to find
new solutions to complex legal issues.”
