It seems the stuff of Hollywood scripts: The high school drop-
out who, by age 25, had collected five university degrees from
prestigious schools like UCLA, Harvard and Yale. But it’s not a movie:
it’s Irell & Manella lawyer Morgan Chu’s true-life story. Chu, the top
point-getter and cover for 2004’s Southern California Super Lawyers,
spoke to us about a little case called City of Hope v. Genentech, which
garnered a $500 million jury verdict. At press time, the case was
pending appeal; Chu informs us today that in 2008, the California
Supreme Court affirmed the award of compensatory damages. “We
were told by many in the appellate bar that it is the largest judgment
ever upheld on appeal in California,” he says.
