With this issue, we are pleased to present a redesigned
Super Lawyers Magazine. We’ve kept the things you love—
such as compelling attorney profiles—and, with input from
our readers, we’ve expanded our editorial lineup to include
a menu of great new items.
You’ll find a lot of quick reads in the front of the
magazine—such as “Discovery,” a brief, witty Q&A by one
of your colleagues. And from cover to cover, you’ll notice
bold new design elements that give the publication a
fresh look and feel.
How do we choose which lawyers to write about? First,
the attorneys must be selected to the current year’s Super
Lawyers list. Then we factor in which firms and practice
areas we’ve recently covered—we don’t want to play
favorites or ignore deserving-but-lesser-known candidates.
We aim for diversity in other areas, too: region, gender,
ethnicity. Attorneys ranking near the top of the list are
more likely to appear on the cover. And of course, the
story itself is crucial. The one thing that isn’t a factor?
Advertising. As with the Super Lawyers list, editorial is
never for sale. Our magazines and editorial team have won
more than a dozen journalism awards around the country.
In this issue, Roanoke’s Brett Marston tells tales of
growing up on a tobacco farm, and how the lessons he
learned working the fields and “popping off suckers”
helped propel him to a corner office at Gentry Locke.
Karen Elliott lets us in on a secret: the mistake she made
as a cub reporter for a National Geographic title, and
the resulting science lesson she’ll never forget. And
Thomas Dunlap breaks down the tech behind his biotech
company’s innovative Lyme disease test.
Thank you for reading. We would love your feedback.
