PUBLISHER’S LETTER
2017
Thank you for helping us celebrate the first year of our
redesigned Super Lawyers Magazine.
We hope you’ve noticed fresh touches—like “Discovery,”
a brief Q&A that gives one of your colleagues the solo
spotlight. And “Local Counsel,” a definitive guide that scores
you the inside scoop on what’s good in the neighborhood.
And we’re still innovating. Often, it’s your innovation that
keeps us on our toes—that’s why you may see stories
like “De Novo,” about cutting-edge legal work; or “Firm
Forward,” which profiles creative ways that firms thrive.
The one thing we won’t reinvent is our bedrock—the
compelling attorney profiles that have won our editorial
team more than a dozen national journalism awards.
How do we choose which lawyers to profile? They must
be selected to the current year’s Super Lawyers list.
Then we consider which firms and practice areas we’ve
recently covered.
We aim for regional, gender and ethnic diversity, too.
Attorneys ranking near the top of the list are more likely
to appear on the cover. And the story itself is crucial. The
one thing that isn’t a factor? Advertising. As with the
Super Lawyers list, editorial is never for sale.
In this issue, we talk with Eugene Pettis, co-founder of
Fort Lauderdale’s Haliczer Pettis & Schwamm, about the
many firsts in his life, including serving as the first African-American president of Florida’s Bar. The important thing,
Pettis says, is bringing others along behind you. At Foley
& Lardner in Orlando, Kimberly Ashby talks construction
law, Shakespearean improv and landscape painting. We
find out where in the world GrayRobinson’s Anastasia
Protopapadakis is, and why you’ll want to know. And High
Springs appellate attorney Paul Regensdorf tells us what
he wishes he’d invented.
Thanks for reading. Drop us a line—we’d love to get
your feedback.

Staff at Super Lawyers
on what they wish they’d
invented:
“Something like farming.
To be the first person to
gather seeds, put them in the
ground where you wanted
them and watch them grow,
thinking that you might just be
changing the world.”
—EVAN KEN TOP, DIREC TOR OF
DA TABASE OPERATIONS
“Teleportation. There would
be lowered amounts of road
rage, car accidents, DUIs and
speeding tickets. It would
get you where you’re going
instantly!”
—ALISON MANNELIN,
PRODUCTION ASSIS TANT
“The telescope. It’s the one
thing that’s best let us know
where we are in the universe,
and how extremely far we have
to go as a species. Second
would be peanut butter,
because it’s just awesome.”
—TIM KNECHT, PRODUC TION
