Andre Rekte is a bear of a man, but his clients see him not just
as a determined battler for them, but also as someone who
provides comfort and security. When an elderly woman believed
that a bank had mismanaged the substantial estate that her
late husband had left her, Rekte filed a lawsuit against the bank
and the trustees for gross negligence. Using the trial skills that
he has honed over his twenty-seven year career, Rekte won a
seven-figure verdict against the bank. The bank had refused to
offer a cent to the widow before trial, which made the victory all
the sweeter for Rekte and his client.
Says Rekte, “When I started at Girardi|Keese as a law clerk,
Tom drummed into us that there is no greater responsibility
or honor than representing a client at trial. I also learned that
there are few things as fun and invigorating as trying a case.”
The burly and plain spoken Rekte has had a remarkable string
of success in trial, where his down-to-earth approach has paid
dividends for his clients.
Girardi has an eye for spotting talent in a prospective lawyer.
Amanda McClintock started with the firm while in law school
on the strength of a five-minute interview with Girardi. Girardi
was impressed by McClintock’s poise and warmth. “Amanda is
as talented a lawyer as we have at the firm,” says Girardi. “Apart
from her outstanding technical abilities in the practice of law, she
also has great empathy and compassion. This has been of vital
importance given the cases she has been asked to handle.”
McClintock has taken the reins on cases in which clients have
suffered catastrophic injuries, particularly explosion and fire cases.
McClintock was the lead lawyer on a case against a utility in which
a mother watched her son get horrifically burned due to contact
with an electrical transmission wire that had detached from a
telephone pole. Hoping to spare his mother from injury, the young
man tried to move the wire to protect his mother. He survived his
burns for 48 hours, while his mother endured the horror of seeing
her son’s limbs amputated in a futile effort to save his life.
A COMMITMENT TO CLIENTS
“Working at Girardi|Keese, I have had the privilege of helping
people through the most devastating emotional and physical
events in their lives,” says McClintock. “I do what I can to see that
some measure of justice is achieved without compounding the pain
that the families have already suffered.”
“Amanda has brought comfort to people who desperately need
it, and obtained great results for our clients in the process,” Girardi
says. “Our lawyers have one job—to do the right thing by everyone
they meet, first and most importantly for our clients. That is the
lesson that we teach our lawyers.”
McClintock and Rekte have absorbed Girardi’s lessons well.
“Each person we meet, whether in the office or on the street or
in the courthouse is entitled to consideration and respect,” says
Rekte. “Whether the person is a juror or a courtroom assistant, the
way we treat them reflects on our client as well as the firm.”
It is that belief that the practice of law is fundamentally a
people-oriented profession that leads Girardi to get lawyers
practical experience in court as soon as possible.
“I am enormously proud of our firm and all the people we’ve
helped,” Girardi says. “My brother, Jack, our young lawyers like
Chris Aumais and V. Andre Sherman, or the folks I’ve practiced
with forever—Jim O’Callahan, Amy Solomon, Andre Rekte,
Amanda McClintock, David Lira, Bob Finnerty, Robert M. Keese,
Howard B. Miller, John K. Courtney, Keith D. Griffin and David N.
Bigelow—these are the finest lawyers I know. And that’s exactly
what our clients deserve.”
