Publisher’s letter
2017
thank you for helping us celebrate the first year of our
redesigned Super Lawyers Magazine. We hope you’ve
noticed fresh touches—like “Discovery,” a brief Q&A that
gives one of your colleagues the solo spotlight. Or “local
Counsel,” a definitive guide that scores you the inside
scoop on what’s good in the neighborhood.
And we’re still innovating. Often, it’s your innovation that
keeps us on our toes—that’s why you may see stories
like “De Novo,” about cutting-edge legal work; or “Firm
Forward,” which profiles creative ways that firms thrive.
the one thing we won’t reinvent is our bedrock—the
compelling attorney profiles that have won our editorial
team more than a dozen national journalism awards.
how do we choose which lawyers to profile? he or she
must be selected to the current year’s super lawyers list.
then we consider which firms and practice areas we’ve
recently covered. We aim for regional, gender and ethnic
diversity, too. Attorneys ranking near the top of the list
are more likely to appear on the cover. And the story itself
is crucial. the one thing that isn’t a factor? Advertising. As
with the super lawyers list, editorial is never for sale.
in this issue, elizabeth Ainslie takes us inside some of the
biggest cases of her wide-ranging career. Mark Aronchick
reveals how empathy was the magic behind overturning
the state ban on same-sex marriage. And seven attorneys
share stories of what it was like to be a woman in law in
the early 1970s.
thanks for reading. Drop us a line—we’d love to get
your feedback.

To complement these
legal trailblazers, our
staff named a few of their
own favorites:
“There had to be a nation’s
first, and that woman was
Arabella Mansfield,
admitted to the Iowa Bar
in 1869. Mrs. Mansfield,
we salute you.”
–AMy White, seNiOr eDitOr
“Dr. Pauli Murray fought
against discrimination of
all kinds. As far as trailblazers
go, she was dynamite.”

“Hailing from South Florida,
where I grew up, Janet Reno
cracked the glass ceiling in
a big way in 1993, when she
was named the first female
U.S. attorney general. Did I
mention she once appeared
on Saturday Night Live?”
