for the Senate
PHO TOGRAPHY BY LARRY MARCUS
When we spoke to Mike Ciresi in 2007, he had his eyes set on the 2008 U.S.
Senate race. A Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party candidate, Ciresi stepped
aside in the Democratic primary, paving the way for the eventual election of
Al Franken. Ciresi was already on the map for his work in State of Minnesota
and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota v. Philip Morris Incorporated, et al.
The case, in which he served as co-lead counsel for Minnesota and Blue Cross
and Blue Shield, was a groundbreaking lawsuit against the tobacco industry.
A four-year investigation turned over more than 30 million pages of internal
documents; four months of trial concluded on the eve of jury deliberations
when the case settled for $7 billion.
